Health Benefits of Chia Seeds November 25 2015

Health Benefits of Chia Seeds

With busy holidays ahead of you, keep your body fueled with La Flor’s all natural chia seeds! ICYMI - they are one of the healthiest foods on the planet and are loaded with necessary nutrients that have important benefits to both your brain and body.

Chia Seeds Are High in Nutrients and Low in Calories

Even though they are tiny, chia seeds are packed with nutrients. They are loaded with fiber, Omega- 3 fatty acids and various other micronutrients. They are also a whole grain food, are non GMO and are gluten free.

Chia Seeds Are High in Quality Protein

Protein is the most weight friendly macronutrient and can drastically reduce your appetite and cravings. Chia seeds are higher in quality protein than most plant foods - which is especially good for those who eat little to no meat.

Chia Seeds Are Essential for Bone Health

If you don't consume much dairy, chia seeds are an excellent source of calcium (18% of the RDA in a single ounce). These seeds are also high in phosphorus, magnesium, and protein which are all essential nutrients for bone health.

Chia Seeds Can Cause Major Improvements in Type 2 Diabetics

In a study of type 2 diabetic patients, researchers found that the group given 37 grams of chia seeds for 12 weeks saw improvements in several important health markers than the group given 37 grams of wheat bran for the same length. The results showed that chia seeds could significantly lower blood pressure and a marker for inflammation.

Chia Seeds Are Easy to Incorporate into Your Diet

Not exactly a health benefit but still important to point out! The seeds themselves have a bland taste which makes them easy to add to practically anything. They can be eaten raw, soaked in juice, added to oatmeal or pudding, and even added to baked goods. Boost your meal's nutritional value just be garnishing with some chia seeds!

For more information about the health benefits of chia seeds, check out Authority Nutrition.

Taste La Flor’s newest addition of power foods today. Chia Seeds contain more calcium than milk and even more potassium than protein and can be added to anything and everything to get the nutritional meal that you were trying for!

6 Spices for Detoxing November 12 2015

During the holidays there are so many delicious treats abound, it’s no wonder that people start their diets after the holiday season ends. But, you can get your body back to where it once was, now, with..... spices!

Not only do spices and herbs transform your dish into a culinary delight but many pack some surprising detox benefits:

Cilantro helps with mercury detoxification, typically due to consuming too much fish. This herb is filled with minerals as well as vitamins A and K and is also proven to be an anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antiseptic.

Cayenne seasoning encourages digestion and muscle movement in your intestines and helps your body absorb nutrients. It is both an antioxidant as well as an anticoagulant that helps clean the blood from unwanted toxins.

Turmeric helps in detoxing your liver because of its active ingredient, curcumin. Curcumin stimulates the production of bile in your gall bladder that is needed to eliminate toxins as well as rejuvenates liver cells that break down harmful compounds.

Cinnamon paired with honey can help in preventing the accumulation of certain fats as well as reduce inflammation in the body. Cinnamon is a good dietary fiber and an excellent source of manganese, calcium, iron and vitamin K.

Rosemary, according to a study, can protect the liver and stomach against carcinogenic and toxic ingredients. It contains phenolic antioxidant rosmarinic and essential oils which are known to have anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antiseptic properties.

Ginger is a great source of sulfur which is important when excreting toxic substances from your body during phase two of the detoxification process. This spicy root also helps in cleansing our system, digesting and settling your stomach.

Everyday we ingest unwanted chemicals and additives without even realizing, so it’s important to filter them out regularly. Help your body bounce back this holiday season and rid any unwanted toxins by adding the above spices to your cooking!

#WellnessWednesday - Which Spices are Good for Your Health? October 28 2015

Spices and herbs have been used for thousands of years to add flavor and aromas to food as well as for medicinal purposes. See below to learn what your pantry staples can do for improving your overall health:

  1. Sage - The chilly weather is on its way which means the coughing season will tag along with it. Sipping on tea paired with some sage has been recommended to help soothe sore throats and upset stomachs. In other studies, the enzymes found in sage have been linked to improved brain functionality, memory, and moods.
  2. Rosemary - Similar to sage, rosemary has also been linked to improved memory and alertness. When cooking with rosemary, most people will use it to season their meats before cooking. Studies have shown that meats that have been seasoned with rosemary extracts will produce less heterocyclic amines - a cancer causing compound produced when meats are grilled, broiled, and fried.
  3. Turmeric - Turmeric is another spice that can help soothe a cold and breathing issues. It’s anti-inflammatory effects are what make turmeric so popular. Pain from injuries and arthritis can be relieved by ingesting turmeric because of the compound curcumin. Curcumin has been studied more in recent years because of its connection with slowing down the growth of tumor and cancer cells.
  4. Parsley - The most used garnish in the kitchen has made the list, and for good reasons. Not only does parsley make a dish complete with its signature look, but it has been linked to slow down the growth of breast cancer cells. Apigenin is a compound found in parsley that helps raise your tolerance against developing tumors. Garnishing your meals used to be for show, but now they’re for health!

While spices haven’t been proven to be a miracle cure for serious diseases, they have been known to help relieve certain pains or symptoms. Start spicing up your diet and reap the benefits the above herbs and spices have to offer.

Ancient Grains to Try October 20 2015

Ancient grains - like farro, millet, spelt, and quinoa - have not only existed but have largely been unchanged for millennia. In recent years, the popularity of these “ancient grains” has skyrocketed - and for good reason. Incorporating more grain varieties into one’s diet offers a wealth of nutrients while equally making meals more interesting!

Get to know some of the most popular ancient grains below and how you can start adding them to your meals:

Millet-  This gluten-free grain is packed with magnesium, zinc, copper, and manganese and is available in white, gray, yellow, and red varieties. Its mild and slightly nutty flavor mixes well with veggies, chicken and some of your favorite La Flor Herbs and Spices for a savory dinner. This recipe of Millet-Stuffed Peppers is easy to make and is ready in less than an hour.

Spelt- This ancient grain that originated back in 5,000 B.C. contains 5.5 grams of protein as well as 3.8 grams of fiber in just a half-cup. Most often, you’ll find this wheat variety in breads, bagels, tortillas, and pastas. Try making some Spelt Biscuits as your next side dish.

Farro- An ancient variety of wheat, farro is still commonly used throughout Italy. It is a high fiber whole grain with a woody but hearty flavor that mixes well in hearty soups and stews. This slow-cooker Mediterranean Kale & Cannellini Stew with Farro recipe is sure to please.

Quinoa- Often referred to as a grain, quinoa is actually a gluten-free seed that can be used in place of pasta, couscous, or oats in your breakfast - taking on the flavor of whatever it is cooked with. Start your day the healthier way with this Strawberry Kiwi Quinoa Breakfast Parfait.

Looking to start switching up your grain varieties? Be sure to purchase La Flor's Quinoa. To cook, bring 2 cups of water and 1 cup of uncooked La Flor Quinoa to a boil in a medium saucepan. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed (15 - 20 minutes).

  • Ginger- Hot yet sweet, even a little woody, ginger is key for desserts, drinks, and savory dishes. The famous dessert that we have all come to know and love is gingerbread cookies but wait until you taste ginger spice cookies.
  • Cloves- They have a strong, bitter yet sweet and almost hot aroma. Don’t know what to cook with cloves? This recipe of baked sweet potatoes with a hint of cloves would be a hit at Thanksgiving.
  • Allspice- A happy combination of nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves - a great fall meal that you can enjoy with some allspice would be marinated pork with caramelized fennel

These spices can certainly be used year round, but really enhance the flavors fall dishes bring. Do you have any go to fall recipes with particular spices or seasonings? Share with the La Flor community on our Facebook page!

Tips and Tricks for Meal Prepping September 28 2015

When you are crunched for time, healthy eating is often the first thing out the window. We get it, you’ve had an exhausting day – and your hangry self is not about to come home and cook a meal.

But that doesn’t mean you have to resort to fast food and take out – all you need to do is set aside some time on one of your slower days to plan and prepare your meals ahead of time. Don’t know where to begin? Try some of these tips and tricks to get started:

Start slow - If you’re just jumping on the meal prepping bandwagon, start off slow. Trying to make and plan a full week’s menu can be overwhelming, especially if cooking intimidates you. Ease yourself into the process, prep a few meals ahead of time until you are comfortable to dive in the full 7 days.

Chop in advance - Avoid losing precious minutes during busy weeknights and pre-chop what you can. Prepping your vegetables in advance and properly storing them in plastic bags or tupperware can make cooking easier while keeping things fresh. Have a stir fry planned? Pre-chop all veggies and meat in individual containers. Then on the night you want to cook it, all you have to do is take out the containers and combine everything into a skillet!

Repurpose your recipes - Think of recipes that can be used as different meals throughout the week. For example, chili one night could mean tacos the next. Choosing meals that can be repurposed is a great way to add some variety to your week’s menu.

Invest in good tupperware – Look for tupperware with compartments that can separate food within the same container. Now you can easily store your meal and its side dishes in one convenient, grab-and-go, proper portioned container. You’ll also want to be sure your tupperware of choice is dishwasher and microwave safe (and BPA free).

Add some spice variety - One common problem meal preppers face - dreading the taste of the same flavors day in and day out. So spice things up! By using aluminum foil you can divide your pan to cook two or three variations of your meat at once!

Not only does meal prepping save you time and money – but it can help you jump back on the healthy train too. Have some meal prep tips you’d like to share? Post it to our Facebook page!

How to Use Cinnamon Sticks September 24 2015

Fall is back! As the weather cools off and the leaves begin to change color, the urge to indulge in some delicious fall treats is overwhelming. You're probably thinking we're about to rattle off 20 pumpkin spice recipes, but we're not that basic.

Frankly, we can't think of a better ingredient to highlight in the fall than cinnamon. So bust out your flannels and over-sized sweaters, get ready to add some cinnamon to your autumn cooking:

Add it to your warm beverage - While you can always add a cinnamon stick to your coffee or tea for a kick of flavor, try steeping it in hot water for a cup of comforting cinnamon tea. It can also double as a stirrer for your hot cocoa, cider, and hot toddies!

Toss some in your crockpot - Adding a cinnamon stick into your slow cooker with meat (like a roast, chicken, or short ribs) can add another delicious flavor to your meal.

Flavor your oats - Instead of topping your morning oatmeal with cinnamon powder - include a cinnamon stick in the pot while cooking (just make sure to remove before serving).

Make some homemade applesauce - It IS apple picking season after all, so grab a few pounds of your favorite apples, a cinnamon stick, and get cookin! Try this recipe here »
